system for 911 professionals. At the same time, agencies have always been responsible for
acknowledging their people respectfully in their own way. PSAPs/Centers need to subscribe to
this curriculum to create a standard in our industry. Because There is no single standard program
in place that is shared amongst 911 professionals. 911 professionals cannot share their accolades
with their fellow professionals outside their home agency. As 911 professionals, we need to
create more camaraderie and brotherhood, like that shared in law enforcement and firefighting,
amongst ourselves.
Across the country, we have thousands of PSAPs staffed with notable operators. These
operators are pushed to the limits daily, carrying out their responsibility to aid those in need.
These 911 professionals have saved countless lives have had to live by a philosophy of
Improvise Adapt & Overcome, and act swiftly to ensure our people's livelihood. These operators'
unfortunate reality is that their actions often go unnoticed or are shared amongst a small
environment of coworkers and family. Outside of a simple post on social media or the ultra-rare
occurrence of the operator(s) being featured on local news, there is no actual vessel to share
these operators' accomplishments. This also limits the ability to create camaraderie in the 911
field.
The solution to the issue of operators' inability to share their accomplishments, sharing a
standard award system amongst PSAPs, and creating camaraderie in the 911 field is the
implementation of the 911 STARs program. Once agencies adopt the 911 Stars program, the
seeds are planted to allow 911 professionals to acknowledge each other's work and make the
public aware of the work. Once implemented and the social media guidelines are adhered to, 911
professionals from all over the country, and possibly the world, can now share and congratulate their comrades behind the mic.
